Text: Otto Bretscher, Linear algebra with applications, 5th edition. We will cover most of chapters 1-8. List of topics can be found at http://www.math.gatech.edu/course/math/4305.

Examinations: There will be 2 full period in-class exams and a final comprehensive exam. The exact dates will be announced 1-2 weeks in advance in class. All examinations will be closed-book and closed notes unless otherwise indicated.

Homework: Due Thursdays in class. You can check the weekly updates of the homework assignments at my website. No late homework papers will be accepted. You may collaborate on homework problems, but you have to write up your own solutions.

Homeworks must be clearly written and stapled.

Academic Honesty:  All students are expected to comply with the Georgia Tech Honor Code, available at http://www.honor.gatech.edu. Any evidence of cheating will be submitted directly to the Dean of Students.

Absence from quizzes and examinations: If absence is due to a legitimate reason, I require, on the day of the exam, an e-mail message briefly describing the reason, and later, good evidence (in writing) of why you were absent (such as doctor's notes...).  In the event of an absence due to travel representing Georgia Tech, you must notify the professor at least two weeks in advance to arrange an early test or other alternative. The penalty for an absence not excused is an exam of 0.

Attendance: Attendance is required for all lectures. The student who misses a class meeting is responsible for any assignments and/or announcements made.

Grading: Grades are computed so that the two in-class tests count 40%, final 40%, and homework 20%.

Letter grade cut-offs: A 90, B 80, C 70, D 60.

Learning Disabilities: It is the right of any student with a certified learning disability to request necessary accommodation. Such requests must be made well in advance of the time that the accommodation is required, ideally in the first or second week of class, and a letter of documentation from the ADAPTS office must be presented at the time of any request.

How to do well in this course: Unless you have studied this subject before you will probably need to spend 2-3 hours on the average to review each day's lecture and complete the assignments. Learning mathematics requires steady effort. Cramming is very risky. Get help (from the professor, and also online!) as soon as you begin to fall behind. It is important to keep a good set of lecture notes. If you miss a lecture, borrow notes from a classmate.
