Syllabus
Instructor: Chongchun Zeng
Prerequisites: (MATH 2403 or MATH 2413 or MATH 24X3 or MATH 2552 or MATH 2562 or MATH 2X52) and (MATH 1522 or MATH 1553 or MATH 1554 or MATH 1564 or MATH 1502 or MATH 1512)
Overview: This course is an introductory course to partial differential equations. We study method of characteristics for first and second order partial differential equations, conservation laws and shocks, classification of second order systems and applications.
Textbook: Introductions to PDEs with Applications by E. C. Zachmanoglou and D. W. Thoe, Dover Publications, 1986.
Material: In this semester, we shall discuss some basic first and second order PDEs and their applications (roughly Chapter 1--7 of the textbook).
- First order PDEs:
- The method of characteristics
- Conservation laws and shocks
- Constant coefficient second order PDEs:
- Derivations and boundary conditions
- Laplace's equation
- The heat equation
- The wave equation
Only the simplest scientific calculators are allowed. In particular, graphic calculators are not allowed.
Grades: 1 final exam 50%, 1 midterm 26%, 6 homework assignments 4% each.
- Exams (final and midterm): The exams are open-book and open-notes (textbook and notes of this course only), but should be completed independently. They will be posted as assignments on Canvas at the beginning of the exam period (also handed out in the classroom to those who prefer paper versions). Each exam should be submitted as a single PDF file electronically on Canvas by the due time (even for those who complete the exams on paper in the classroom). Please write your exam solutions clearly and circle the final answer of each problem in a box with no corrections inside. There will be no make-up for missed exams, except under provable impossibility (due to medical or other emergency conditions) to complete the exam in the exam period (contact Dr. Zeng).
- The midterm exam: The tentative schedule of the midterm exams is 2:00pm -- 3:15pm EST on Mon. 10/18. It will be posted as an assignment on Canvas available during that time window 2:00pm -- 3:15pm. Submission should be uploaded by 3:15pm.
- Final exam: The final will be given on Fri. 12/10 during the window 2:40pm -- 5:30pm EST. The PDF file of the exam problems will be available on Canvas and in classroom at 2:40pm EST and your PDF scan of the solutions should be uploaded on Canvas by 5:30pm EST.
- Homework: Homework will be assigned at the end of each lecture and then put on this webpage in the below. You may discuss the homework problems with other students in this class, but you should write down the solutions and complete the homework independently. The homework will be collected roughly every 2 weeks (see below). On each collecting day, the homework (as the submission of a single PDF file) is due at 2:00pm on Canvas. Each assignment includes all the problems assigned in earlier weeks, but after the previous assignments. Some selected problems from each assignment will be graded and the score will be given based on both the graded problems and the completion of the whole assignment. It is suggested that you start to work on homework problems right after they are assigned instead of waiting until close to the due date. The exact homework collecting dates are:
9/8 (Wed.), 9/22(Wed.), 10/6(Wed.), 10/20(Wed.), 11/3(Wed.), 11/17(Wed.)
- Letter grades: In general your final grade will be assigned as a letter grade according to the following scale based on the total numerical scores:
When needed, a curve may be applied to adjust the letter grades upward.
Important Course info:
- Course website: http://people.math.gatech.edu/~zengch/Fall2021/math4347/Fall2021math4347.html includes the most updated assignments as well as basic course information, syllabus, etc.
- CANVAS will be mainly used for the assignment, gradebook, links, materials, and announcements.
- Piazza, accessed via Canvas ("Piazza" tab on the left, or try piazza.com/gatech/fall2021/math4347auag), is a forum for discussions. The only restriction I like to impose on Piazza is: please do not discuss exam problems and solutions.

Student-Faculty Expectations Agreement
At Georgia Tech we believe that it is important to strive for an atmosphere of mutual respect, acknowledgement, and responsibility between faculty members and the student body. See http://www.catalog.gatech.edu/rules/22/ for an articulation of some basic expectation that you can have of me and that I have of you. In the end, simple respect for knowledge, hard work, and cordial interactions will help build the environment we seek. Therefore, I encourage you to remain committed to the ideals of Georgia Tech while in this class.
