The recommended text for this course is
- Topology by James Munkres (2nd edition).
I will try to make the lectures fairly self-contained so the main reason you will need the books is as another source for some of the material. (If you would prefer not to buy the book, you can probably get by with the class notes.)
Some other good books to consider are:
- Basic Topology by M.A. Armstrong.
- General Topology by Stephen Willard.
- Topology without tears by Sidney Morris.
This last reference is an on-line book.
The course grade will be based on the following.
Homework: 30%
2 Midterm:
20% each
Final Exam:
30%
Every two weeks or so I will assign a set of homework problems.
You should check the homework web page regularly, since I will not always announce when I post
an assignment. You
will have around two week to work on the problems (the exact due date will be on the
problem set).
Midterm 1 is tentatively scheduled for
Monday, September 26
Midterm 2 is tentatively scheduled for Monday, November 7
Final Exam is tentatively scheduled for Friday Dec 9th, 11:30 - 2:20
