The FAQs

  1. Where is the class? The lectures and the recitations will be in room 249 of the Skiles Building.
  2. Are calculators allowed in the tests? As it says in the syllabus:
Calculators and tests. No restrictions will be placed on the use of calculators that do elementary mathematics on the tests. Calculators that can do calculus symbolically shall not be brought to tests. No credit will be given on tests for a correct answer without the intermediate steps.
Graphing is OK, calculus on the calculator is not.
  3. What about the grading system? The exact numerical formula is in the syllabus.
  4. What happens if I miss a test? The grading formula uses a drop and "vector grading" to cope with personal events such as illness or family emergencies. If you will miss a test due to participating in a sports competition or similar travel on behalf of Georgia Tech, you have the choice of negotiating an early test by notifying the professor at least two weeks in advance or treating it as a personal event.
  5. Did you get my mail? Well, if I didn't, how would I know? I try to send at least a brief acknowledgment to my students' mail, so if you got no reply, you may wish to try again or talk to me in person. If your handle is something like "Math 2401" and not "hey," because I delete spam without reading it.
  6. I am writing to inquire about what applications you would recommend for Math 2401 and if they are available for the Macintosh. We will use mathematical software. The campus standard is Maple for mathematical calculations, and it certainly runs on the Macintosh, as well as on Windows and Linux. I believe the computer store sells a "software suite" which contains Maple and many other useful applications at a good price.

If you already have Mathematica, its capabilities are pretty much equivalent to those of Maple, and you will not be forced to switch.

In addition, you should have good software for getting onto the Web, including a Java-capable browser and Acrobat Reader.

  7. What should we do on a Tuesday or Thursday if the TA does not show up and there is no substitute? Your TAs are Viswanee, in room 249 and Antonio in 243. These rooms are near each other in the Skiles building. In case several minutes go by and Antonio has not arrived, his section should move to Room 249 and join Viswanee's section. Since 243 is not as large as 249, in case Viswanee is absent, students should go to room 243 and inform Antonio of the problem, and then all students should move to Room 249. I hope we never need this plan, but the recitations are important, and this will minimize the damage in case of a problem.
  8. When is the final exam? The final schedule is on-line at
http://www.oscarweb.gatech.edu/spring/oscar/finals.html According to this schedule, our exam is Tuesday, 30 April, at 8:00 a.m. Please tell me as soon as possible about conflicts (with full, precise details about the class or classes with which we have a conflict), graduating status, etc. I need this information by e-mail or in writing two weeks in advance .
