Textbook: Topics in Algebra by I. N. Herstein, 2nd edition
Topics: Group theory and ring theory. Most of Chapters 1,2, and 3 from the textbook.
Grading: Homework assignments (20%), three exams (20% each), final exam (20%).
OR Homework (25%), three in-class exams (25% each). I will calculate the your grade both ways and take the better.

### Announcements

• 9/21: I will be away during the week of September 26. There will still be homework due on Wednesday. Prof. Leykin will cover the lectures. There will be no office hours. You may ask for homework help during office hour on Friday or during class on Monday.
• 9/21: The first exam is scheduled for October 7th and will cover the material up to Section 2.8.
• 9/23: Note the extra option for grade calculation.
• 10/3: There will be office hour from 10 to 12 this Wednesday; no office hour on Friday.
• 10/5: Exam 1 is on Friday. Notes and calculators are not allowed. There is still a homework assignment due next Wednesday although we're having an exam.
• 10/13: Lecture notes for group actions posted above under Resources.
• 10/24: Exam 2 will be on November 4 and will cover up to Section 3.2.
• 11/06: On Exam 2, out of 39 points, the class average was 21.6 points and the median was 21 points.
