COURSE OUTLINE FOR MATH 1502

(1.) TOPICS OF STUDY AND LEARNING OUTCOMES:

This course is aimed at developing proficiency, with an understanding of the ideas behind the methods, in the following specific subjects:

The first three topics complete the coverage of single variable calculus, and the fourth, on which we shall spend roughly two thirds of the course
is fundamental in virtually all of the sciences. 


(2.) TEXTS:

The textbook are: Thomas, Calculus: Early Transcendentals, 13th ed.
                             For the topics on linear algebra we use the book Linear Algebra and Its Applications by Lay (L), fourth edition.

The readings can be broken into five blocks: One lectures lasts 50 minutes.

Block 1:  Numerical integration, improper integrals, elementary Differential Equations, Sequences and Series:
Thomas Sections 8.7, 8.8 7.2, 9.2, 4.5, 10.1 - 10.4 (9 lectures)

Block 2: Power Series and Taylor approximations and vector geometry:  Thomas 10.5 - 10.9, 12.1 - 12.6 (9 lectures)

Block 3: Introduction to Matrices, Row Reduction and Solution of Linear Systems.   (9 lectures)

Block 4: Inverses, Linear Independence, Kernel and Range.   (9 lectures)

Block 5: Eigenvectors, Eigenvalues and Geometric Topics.   (9 lectures)

(3.) TEST DATES:

Block 1:  Thursday, September 11; . (Lecturing on this material finishes on Monday, September 8).  

Block 2:  Thursday, October 2; . (Lecturing on this material finishes on Monday, September 29 ). 

Block 3:  Thursday, October 23 (Lecturing on this material finishes on Monday, Oct 20 ).  

Block 4:  Thursday, November 13  (Lecturing on this material finishes on Monday November 10).  

Block 5:  This material will be tested only on the final exam -- which does not mean that the final exam will be only on this material. The final exam will be comprehensive.

Week 1: August 18, 20, 22.

Reading: Sections 8.7, 8.8, 7.2  in Thomas. Homework problems:  In addition to the online homework do problems 28 on page 503, problems 6, 33 on page 513,  17,  29 on page 437 /438in Thomas.

Week 2: August 25, 27, 29.

Reading: Sections 9.2, 4.5, 10.1   in Thomas. Homework problems: In addition to the online homework problems solve the following: Problems 7, 12, 16 and 20 in Section 9.2 in Thomas,  problems  36, 43,  66, 71 in Section 4.5 in Thomas, problems  56, 65, 87, 97 in Section 10.1 in Thomas.                                                                                        

Week 3: September1, 3, 5. (September 1 is Labor day, official school holiday)

Reading: Sections 10.2 - 10.4  in Thomas. Homework problems: In addition to the online homework problems do problems 13, 31, 42 in Section 10.2 in Thomas, 30, 48, 55 in Section10.3 in Thomas, 45, 53 in Section 10.4 in Thomas.

Week 4: September 8, 10, 12. Test 1 on September 11.

Reading: Sections  10.5 - 10.7 in Thomas  Homework Problems: 35 and 38 in Section 10.5, Problems 18 and 58 in Section 10.6, Problems 15 and 40 in Section 10.7  of Thomas

Week 5: September 15, 17, 19.

Reading: Sections 10.8, 10.9, 12.1 - 12.2  in Thomas, as always, in addition to the online problems do problems 19 and 20 in Section 10.8,  and 40 - 42 in Section 10.9 in Thomas.

Week 6: September 22, 24, 26. (Progress Report Grades due on September 26, Noon).   

Reading: 12.3 - 12.6 in Thomas. In addition to the online homework do the problems: 32, 43 in Section 12.3, problems 25, 35 in Section 12.4, problems 34, 40 in Section 12.5 and

problems 23, 28 in Section 12.6 in Thomas.

Week 7: September 29, October 1, 3. Test 2 on October 2.

Reading: Sections 1.1-1.3 in Lay. In addition to the online homework please do the problems 25, 26 in Section 1.1, problem 7, 30, 31 in Section 1.2, problem 25 and 27 in Section 1.3

Week 8: October 6, 8, 10. (October 10, last day to drop an individual class with grade `W' by 4:00 pm ET)

Reading: Sections 1.4, 1.5, 1.7 in Lay.  In addition to the online homework, please do the problems 13, 21, 22, 30, in Section 1.4 in Lay  17, 23, 39  in Section 1.5 in Lay,  14, 21, 41, 43 in Section 1.7 in Lay.

Week 9: October 13, 15, 17. (October 11 - 14 Fall recess.)

Reading: Sections 1.8, 1.9  in  Lay.  In addition to the online homework, please do the problems 3, 4, 9, 19 in Section 1.8 in Lay, problems 2, 3, 8, 21 and 22 in Section 1.9 in Lay.

Week 10: October 20, 22, 24. (October 26 last day to withdraw from school with `W' in all courses by 4:00 ET). Test 3 on October 23.

Reading: Sections 2.1-2.3 and 2.5 in Lay. In addition to the online homework do problems: 1,2 in Section 2.1 in Lay, 1, 2, 7, 21 in Section 2.2 in Lay, 1, 3, 5, 10, 20 in Section 2.3 Lay.

Week 11: October 27, 29, 31.

Reading: Sections 2.8, 2.9, 3.1 in Lay. In addition to the online homework do problems: 5, 6,7, 11, 12 on pp151/152 in Lay, 1, 2, 19, 20, 21 on pp 158/159 in Lay, 1, 2, 31, 32, 37 on pp 167/168 in Lay.

Week 12: November 3, 5, 7.

Reading: Sections 3.2, 3.3, 5.1, 5.2 in Lay. In addition to the online homework do problems: 1-3, 24, 25, 43 on pp 175/176 in Lay, 19-21, 23,24 on p. 184  in Lay, 1-3, 21-23 on pp 271/272 in Lay, 10-12, 15 and 16 on p. 280 in Lay.

Week 13: November 10, 12, 14. Test 4 on November 13.

Reading:  Sections 5.3, 5.5, 6.1, 6.2, in Lay. In addition to the online homework do problems:  3, 4, 9-12 in Section 5.3 in Lay, 1-4 in Section 5.5 in Lay, 14, 15-18, 25 in Section 6.1 in Lay,

Week 14: November 17, 19, 21.

Reading: Sections   6.2-6.4 in Lay. In addition to the online homework do problems:  12, 16, 17, 18 on p 345 in Lay, 7, 11, 12, 13 on p 352 in Lay, problems 3, 9, 10, 15, 16 on pp 358/359

Week 15: November 24, 26, 28.  (November 27-28  Thanksgiving, official school holiday)

Reading: Sections 6.4, 6.5 in Lay. In addition to the online homework do problems:  in Lay, 1, 2, 5, 6 on p 366 in Lay.

Week 16: December 1, 3, 5.  (December 5, last day of classes).

Reading:  Sections  7.1, 7.2, 7.4 in Lay. There is no online homework, but please do problems: 8, 10, 11, 17, 18, 20,   on page 399 in Lay, 7, 8, 9, 13 on p.407 in Lay, 2, 3, 8, 11, 23 on pp 423/424 in Lay.
