COURSE OUTLINE FOR MATH 2401

(1.) TOPICS OF STUDY AND LEARNING OUTCOMES:

In the first part of the course we study the differential geometry of curves and then go on to multivariable calculus,
where we study linear approximations, Taylor's theorem for multi-variable functions, Lagrange multiples and constrained optimization, multi-dimensional integration and vector analysis including the theorems of Green, Gauss and Stokes.

Students are expected to solve simple problems in the theory of curves, to compute with functions of several variables and solve some optimization problems. Students are also expected to compute line integrals and multiple integrals and understand their connections via the theorems of Gauss, Green and Stokes.

(2.) TEXTS:

The textbook are: Thomas, Calculus: Early Transcendentals, 13th ed.
                            
The course has 44 lectures. One lectures lasts 50 minutes.

(3.) TEST DATES:

Test 1:  Thursday, January 29, covering everything up and including January 26 lecture.

Test 2:  Thursday, February 19, covering everything up and including February 16 lecture.

Test 3:  Thursday,  March 12, covering everything up and including March 9 lecture.

Test 4:  Thursday,  April 2,  covering everything up and including March 30 lecture.

Final Exam:  This material will be tested only on the final exam -- which does not mean that the final exam will be only on this material. The final exam will be comprehensive.

There will be two pop quizzes during the term.
