Beginner's routines are somewhat different from the routines that are most effective after you've been lifting for a while. Here is an example of a beginner's routine:
Do three or four sets of about 10 repetitions, with weights so that the last repetitions of the last several sets are difficult or impossible. Do this three times a week (say MWF). Rest 1.5 to 3 or so minutes between sets. Do this for about 2-6 months. Then change to a split routine.
