We will be using
MyMathLab (MML)
for homework through a joint code for the text. In order to register,
you will need our course id listed below.

Important notes on MML:

If you already have an account on MyMathLab using this combined textbook
within the past 18 months, then you do not need to purchase a new code.
Login to your account on MyMathLab, select the option to add a new course,
and enter our course ID.

If you already have a MyMathLab account that used either the Thomas or the
Lay texbook in the past 18 months, but you were unable to add our course
using the previous step, please send an email to gatechmath@yahoo.com and

You should receive a reply within 36 business hours from the Pearson
support team regarding your account status. In the meantime, you can

If you do not have a MyMathLab account using the Thomas or Lay textbooks, or
if your account is over 18 months old, you will need to purchase a new code
for our course. Please refer to the registration document, located in the
“Resources” section on t-square, to create your new account.

When signing up for MyMathLab, it will be immensely helpful to me
(for grading purposes) if you will set your STUDENT ID to your USERID for
the GT system (i.e., your T-square USERID, as in “gburdell3”, etc).

MyMathLab comes with an entire electronic version of the textbook; it is
your choice if you would also like to own the textbook in print. You may
purchase a MyMathLab code either from the bookstore or on-line while
registering here . If you prefer to
own a hardcopy
of the text, the bookstore offers packages of MyMathLab combined with a
loose-leaf or hardcover version of the Thomas and/or Lay textbook(s) that
is less expensive than purchasing the text(s) and code separately.

COURSE DESCRIPTION/SYLLABUS
I promise you lots of examples, colorful drawings and a lively discussion of
the important topics of this class. For more details, see
here .
PREREQUISITES
SAT Math score 600 or MATH 1113 Precalculus.
MATH 1553, MATH 1554, MATH 1564 and MATH 4305 are equivalent and only one
can be taken for credit.
MIDTERM-EXAMS
There are two in-class (during recitation) midterm exams on Wednesday
February 24 and Wednesday March 30. I do not accept make-up exams unless
there is a serious documented reason. You may not use calculators, notes
or any powered devices during the exam. Please note that you can only take
your midterm exam in the section that you have been assigned. If you take
a midterm in another section, you will receive a 0/100. You can find which
section you are assigned to from t-square.
FINAL EXAM
Calculators or notes or powered devices are not allowed in the final exam.
Conflict in final exams means having 3 final exams in the same day. In that
case, you can reschedule the one in the middle. In case of a final exam
conflict, I need a two week advance notice to accomodate your
request. The final exam is where I lecture, and not where your recitations
meet. That is, Howey Physics.
IS YOUR GRADE FAIR?
Please keep in mind that:

All problems in the homework, midterms and the final exam will be from the
book and sometimes even from your assigned homework problems or
from examples that the book works out explicitly. So, you do not need older
practice exams. If you can do the problems of the book, you have mastered
the class and deserve an A.

Each problem is graded by the same TA/lecturer for the entire class.
This eliminates any the differences in grading style.

There is a clear minimum average grade which quarantees you one of the
letter grade, see below.

But still, is your letter grade fair? What if you put all that effort and
did not get the grade that you deserved? From a fellow student
perspective, you may search
reddit for comments of students who took this class in the past.
You are welcome to add your own comments on a new thread.
ATTENDANCE
Although attendance is not mandatory for the lectures and the recitations,
you are strongly encouraged to attend. Students who do not attend
the lectures statistically do below average--and usually end up with a C or
lower grade. Attendance is an important part of learning. During the
lectures, you should turn all powered devices (including phones, laptops,
music players) off.
GRADES
The final course grade will be calculated according to the
following scheme:

Homework : 15 %
-
Midterms : 2 x 20 %

Final Exam : 45 %
If the average course grade (out of 100) is
- at least 80, then you will get an A,
- at least 70, then you will get a B or A,
- at least 60, then you will get a C, B or A,
- at least 50, then you will get a D, C, B or A,
- if your final exam grade is less than 40, then you will
get an F.
ACADEMIC HONOR CODE

during the midterms and final exams.

HOMEWORK ASSIGNEMENTS
Homework is posted, collected and graded on
mymathlab . You cannot receive any
credit for missed homework. Homework which is past due, is not available
for you to view in mymathlab.
