  • Week 1, 8/21-8/25: Please read pages 24-44 of the textbook.
  • Week 2, 8/28-9/1: Please read pages 44-51 and 57-59 of the textbook.
  • Week 3, 9/4-9/8: Please read pages 59-68 and 72-81 of the textbook.
  • Week 4, 9/11-9/15: Topics covered: conservation laws, weak solutions, creation of shocks.
  • The date of Test 1 was changed due to Hurricane Irma. Test 1 will be on Monday, 9/25. You can have a one page (one side only) formula sheet during the test. The test covers first order linear and quasilinear equations, the method of characteristics, conservation laws, weak solutions, creation of shocks, entropy solutions (the material covered in weeks 1-5).
  • Week 5, 9/18-9/22: Conservation laws, shocks, entropy solution. Series solutions and the Cauchy-Kovalevskaya theorem. Please read pages 96-107 of the textbook.
  • Week 6, 9/25-9/29: Please read pages 112-124, 132-133 of the textbook. (Pages 126-131 are optional.)
  • Week 7, 10/2-10/6: Please read pages 137-149, 153-163, 166-173 of the textbook.
  • Week 8, 10/9-10/13: Please read pages 173-182 of the textbook.
  • Test 2 is on Monday, 10/23. You can have a one page (one side only) formula sheet during the test. The test covers series solutions and the Cauchy-Kovalevskaya theorem and the material covered in weeks 6-9. Test 2 does not cover Fourier series.
  • Week 9, 10/16-10/20: Please read pages 183-199, 257-258, 206-210 of the textbook.
  • My office hours on Tuesday, 10/17 are canceled. I'll have additional office hours on Wednesday, 10/18, 11-12.
  • Week 10, 10/23-10/27: Please read pages 199-205, 211-223 of the textbook.
  • Week 11, 10/30-11/3: Please read pages 223-231, 240-244, 261-274 (you may skip pages 268 and 269) of the textbook.
  • Test 3 is on Wednesday, 11/15. You can have a one page (one side only) formula sheet during the test. The test covers the material covered in weeks 9-12 and Fourier series and the method of separation of variables (including pages 173-178).
  • Week 12, 11/6-11/10: Please read pages 274-311 of the textbook.
  • My office hours on Tuesday, 11/14 are moved to 10-11 am.
  • Week 13, 11/13-11/17: Please read pages 312-328 of the textbook.
  • Week 14, 11/20-11/24: Please read pages 331-336 of the textbook.
  • The final exam is on Monday, 12/11, 2:50-5:40 pm in Skiles 257. You can have a one two-sided page of notes during the final.
  • Week 15, 11/27-12/1: Please read pages 336-351, 357-376 of the textbook.
  • My office hours on Tuesday, 12/5 and Monday 12/11 are canceled. I'll have additional office hours on Wednesday, 12/6, 11-12 and Thursday, 12/7, 10-11 am.
