Dynamical Systems is the mathematical study of systems that evolve in time and/or space. While Math 2403 focuses on linear systems, the vast majority of dynamical systems arising in science and engineering are nonlinear. Linear systems can be broken down into parts, each of which can be easily analyzed, and then the effects added together. Nonlinear systems are fundamentally different; their components interact in complicated and often unpredictable ways, Nonlinear systems exhibit a rich and complicated “zoo” of behaviors, most of which are impossible in linear systems. Nonlinear systems almost never have formula solutions and naive computer simulations not uncommonly lead to eroneous results.

The goal of Part I of this two-part course sequence is to provide students with the insights, tools, and techniques to analyze low dimensional continuous time dynamical systems (ODEs) and their bifurcations. The course will be intuitive, geometric, and careful, but not detailed proof-oriented. I plan to present many applications and welcome requests.

Students with disabilities who require reasonable accommodations to participate fully in the course activities or meet course requirement are encouraged to register with the ADAPTS Disability services at 404.894.2564 or http://adapts.gatech.edu. Please contact me ahead of time to discuss any issues related to disabilities.
