Course Description

This is an introduction to the study of curves and surfaces in Euclidean 3-space. The main theme of the class will be various notions of curvature, and their relation to the local and global properties of curves and surfaces. In particular, we will cover the four vertex theorem, Fairy-Milnor theorem, Gauss's Theorema Egregium, and the Gauss-Bonnet theorem.

Prerequisites

Vector Calculus and Linear Algebra.

Texts

Instructor's Lecture Notes, and Differential Geometry of Curves and Surfaces by Manfredo P. do Carmo.

Homework

Homeoworks will be assigned every Thursday in class and will be due the following Thursday in class. Late Homeworks will not be accepted.

Attendance Policy

All students are required to attend all lectures.

Grading

The grade is based on class participation (10%), homework assignments (15%), a midterm (25%) on Tuesday October 16, and a final exam (50%) on Wednesday, Dec 12 from 11:30 to 2:20.
